Are you looking for a new ski experience so you can impress your friends? Why not try to ski on each of the 7 continents? Here are some of the more unusual places you can ski around the world.
Africa – Morocco:
It may surprise some, but you can ski in Africa! While most people travel to the Moroccan beaches in the winter, you can ski in Oukaïmeden in the Atlas mountains. The resort has a couple of lifts, including Africa’s highest at 3,258 metres. Snow isn’t guaranteed, but you can always retreat to those beaches for some water
skiing…
Morocco isn’t the only African country with ski resorts – check out Algeria, Lesotho and South Africa as well.
Antarctica:
Well, there is one thing you can be sure of in the Antarctic, and that is plenty of snow! However, there are no pistes, lifts or mountain restaurants – you are on your own! Skiing in Antarctica requires a lot of money, and a fair bit of ski touring experience as you will need to make your own way up the mountain. 2 week skiing expeditions run during December and January only – but you will need to be flexible as getting there isn’t easy!
Asia – Iran:
Iran has some excellent skiing, notably at Dizin, one of the world’s highest ski resorts. The season runs from December until May, and there is usually plenty of snow. However, don’t expect a crazy après-ski as alcohol is most definitely not permitted!
Other Asian countries with ski resorts include China, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Israel, India, Pakistan and Mongolia!
Australasia – Australia:
There are actually a reasonable number of ski resorts in Australia, including Thredbo, Mt Buller and Perisher Blue. These are all excellent resorts, with extensive facilities and are within range of Sydney and Melbourne. Just don’t turn up in January expecting to ski – the Southern hemisphere winter runs from June to October!
Within Australasia, New Zealand also has quite a bit of fantastic skiing.
Europe – Cyprus:
Fancy skiing down Mt Olympus in the middle of the Mediterranean? Why not? Head over to the Troodos mountains in Cyprus to access some unique skiing from January to March. Snow is slightly unreliable, and it
is best to stay in Nicosia or Limassol, but they are only an hour away from skiing down from the highest point in Cyprus.
There is endless skiing available throughout Europe, although the ski resorts in the Alps and Pyrenees are probably the most famous.
North America – USA:
USA is home to some of the best skiing in the world – fantastic snow in Colorado and Utah, great skiing in Vermont, in fact you can ski in over half the states! Why not visit Cataloochee in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, or Ski Apache in New Mexico – the southernmost ski resort in North America.
Plenty of skiing, and you can virtually guarantee that the resort staff will ensure you have a great time.
There is also some awesome skiing in Canada, but surprisingly you can ski in Mexico too!
South America – Bolivia:
Chacaltaya is the highest ski ‘resort’ in the world at over 5000m high! There was a rope tow to hurtle you up to the top of the ski run, so you could then charge down the glacier for another go. Sadly, however, the glacier has now completely vanished – much quicker than expected, and the rope tow is no longer operational. The determined can still ski there if there is sufficient snow during the winter, although you will need to walk to the top of the slope!
While it is possible to ski in Peru, Ecuador and Columbia, the best skiing in South America is in Chile and Argentina where there are plenty of fantastic resorts.
